-In Memoriam -  It is with great sorrow that we note the recent passing of our fellow Fiber Society colleague Kenneth D. Langley, former Chancellor Professor and Chair of the Department of Materials and Textiles, College of Engineering, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth (UMD).  Professor Langley, who joined The Fiber Society in 1981, earned his undergraduate degree from UMD, and a MS from the Institute of Textile Technology, Charlottesville, Virginia.  In addition to his teaching and work in industry, he also was president of KDLangly Fiber Services.  His obituary can be found at http://www.hathawayfunerals.com/obits/obituaries.php/obitID/150882.

-New Open Access Journal - The Journal of Textiles and Fibrous Materials is a new peer-reviewed, open access journal which aims to promote rapid and wide dissemination of research in the areas of textiles, clothing, and all kinds of fiber based structures.  The journal accepts original research and review articles, which present research in fundamental and applied areas.  All submitted manuscripts considered suitable for the Journal of Textiles and Fibrous Materials are subjected to a rigorous peer review process in order to ensure that all published articles are of the highest quality.  Please follow the link provided for full details about this new journal.

-We are delighted to announce that ASTM Committee D 13 on Textiles has added The Fiber Society to their “Related Links” list [https://www.astm.org/COMMIT/RELATED/D13.htm]  ASTM Committee D13was formed in 1914 and comprises 561 members.  The group currently has jurisdiction over 364 standards, which are published in the “Annual Book of ASTM Standards,” Volumes 7.01 and 7.02.

Please join The Fiber Society in congratulating long-time Fiber Societymember Dr. Gang Sun, Professor, Textiles and Clothing, University of California, Davis, upon his receipt of the 2016 Olney Medal.  Established in 1944, the award honors AATCC founder Dr. Louis Atwell Olney.
The Olney Medal signifies outstanding achievement in textile chemistry, or in polymer or other fields of chemistry that are of major importance to textile sciences and fibrous materials. This also includes the development of chemical agents or chemical processes used in the manufacture of textiles, fibrous materials, or methods for their evaluation.”

Dr. Sun’s award was announced in the March/April 2017 issue of theAATCC Review [http://www.aatcc.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/2016_Olney_award_article.pdf] and his Olney Medal Paper, “Creating Novel Functions on Textiles by Applying Organic Chemistry,” appears in the May/June issue of that journal.
